Android, Competition, and the iPhone HD
Gizmodo's leak of the device known tentatively as the iPhone HD, shed light on how the iPhone will evolve past the two year old design of the current 3GS model. Apple has a tendency to share designs and features amongst its entire lineup - so the features in the iPhone HD will trickle up into the iPad.
The original iPhone burst onto the mobile market like a supernova and caught the industry completely by surprise. Every manufacturer released their "iPhone killer" phones such as the Samsung Instinct, HTC Touch, and Blackberry Storm to seemingly little effect. Apple has gone from strength to strength with innovations ranging from capacitive screens, a stunning UI, and the App Store.
When Google launched its first Android phone, it was a decent device, but hobbled by clunky industrial design and an immature OS. Fast forward two years, and devices like the Droid and Hero began to gain acceptance from both carriers and consumers. In early 2010, Google launched the Nexus One "superphone"; its hardware partners are launching a series of models with high res 800 x 480 screens, 1ghz processors and showcase features such as 4G internet access. iPhone sales havent slowed down from the competition, but Google's Android OS sales are growing faster than the iPhone's and this must have Apple worried.
For the first time since the release of the original iPhone, there is competition from a company with the resources to merge the expertise of handset makers and the reach of wireless carriers into a serious adversary. Apple's superiority over competitors is largely erased and now Apple will need to fight to keep its lead over rivals. Google and its partners HTC and to a lesser degree Motorola have stopped trying to be an iPhone and are developing their own OS strategy. If the iPhone HD is everything that Gizmodo says it is, Apple's lead is secure for a while longer, but only a little while longer.
